Hypertension expedites risk of CVDs  According to the World Health Organization, more than 17.9 million people die  due to cardiovascular diseases every year.  It is a leading cause of death  globally. More than 4  out of 5 CVD deaths  are due to heart attacks and  strokes.  India accounts one fifth of the  deaths due to heart  strokes or heart diseases.  There are many behavioural factors affecting  cardiovascular diseases, however, according to a study titled  ‘Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors in Hypertensive Patients:  A Case Study of Jimma University  Medical Centre’ by the national  library of science, hypertension is  the leading cause of CVD.  Approximately 54 per cent of heart  strokes and 47 per cent of coronary  heart diseases, worldwide,  are associated with hypertension.

India is on the way to gaining independence from its biggest killer, cardiovascular disease.

India is on the way to gaining independence from its biggest killer, cardiovascular disease. One of India’s most impressive achievements is gaining independence from industrially-produced trans fat in body  by committing to the WHO goal of  elimination by 2023. This artificial, toxic food  additive increases the risk of heart attack and death;  replacing it with healthier fats and oils does not  increase the cost or change the taste of food. When India gained independence in 1947, malnutrition and diseases such as tuberculosis  malaria, and enteric infections were leading killers. Average life expectancy  was just 32 years, and more than a quarter of children didn’t make it  to their fifth birthday. Since then, the country’s population  quadrupled, life expectancy more than doubled to 70 years, and  child mortality declined 85%.
